Jiyun Seong uses hoses as lines of thought for emptying and filling, while treating them at the same time as organic entities that flow and harden. In this exhibition, she takes the orders, flows, and habitual structures surrounding gender as something to question—or as material to parody. Or to crossbreed.
HeadTail Anatomy I, II: The Direction of Head and Tail, Gaze and Power, and the Subversion of Sexual Symbols
In a heteronormative world, the position of “looking from behind” is predominantly given to men, with that gaze fixed on women. Yet in the animal world, some males display themselves by shaking their own tails, brilliant feathers, and colors. The face in HeadTail Anatomy II takes on a form suggestive of male genitalia, but in fact appears as a female subject overcoming the constraints and limitations of the body she was born with. Perfume traveling upward in reverse from the tail sprays seduction—or rather, pleasantness.
Meanwhile, the “blue tail” of HeadTail Anatomy I, coquettishly displaying itself before her, is a new entity grafted onto the “face of red fragments,” made from pieces broken and fallen away from several earlier works. The distinctions between head and tail, face and anus, front and back collapse, and another hybrid being emerges. It speaks with its tail and seduces with its face. The severed past becomes a head, while disparate sexual characteristics become entangled within a single body.
The Loop: Biological Sex, and Nature in Flux
XX and XY sex chromosomes are decisive, regardless of the complexities of life. At times I find myself wondering, “Are humans inevitably slaves to their hormones?” Yet even when we are born as a particular sex, hormones fluctuate in cycles, and their patterns vary from person to person. We may also supplement them through medication or food.
The ring-shaped hose of 〈The Loop〉 turns X-shaped threads into winding drawings within resin as it flows and hardens. Meanwhile, the hose, which appears as either a parabola or an S-shaped curve depending on the direction from which it is viewed, is composed—regardless of human chromosomes—of foods associated with restoring vitality or supplementing sex hormones, along with elements drawn from forms of life in which sex is differently organized or transformed.
Playground of Cashews, Peanuts, Bananas, Cucumbers,
Green Grapes, Figs, and Donut Filled with Strawberry Jam
Preface/Kim Sohee
Play tends to begin with obstacles. Some kids climbed slides backward, secretly picked flowers from the flowerbeds to play pretend kimchi-making, and jumped over chalk-drawn shapes. This is a playground. The three artists gathered here decided to play by traversing a flattened world vertically1. Their obstacles are the signs found in life. These signs have been violent, forbidding possibilities, cutting off flows, and expelling different forms.
Park Jaeyoung noticed a sign in a public place: “Do not climb.” If everything must move from top to bottom, she decided it was better to flip the world upside down. She climbs upward with her brush, inverted. In Jaeyoung’s paintings, achievement and falling happen simultaneously. In a world where sky and earth are inverted, distinctions lose meaning. Seong Jiyun stickily mixes and grafts symbols
and samples of the two genders commonly recognized by society, expanding the outer boundaries of femininity. Inside the elongated sculptures, estrogen and testosterone, medicinal substances aimed at overcoming pain and constitutional weaknesses, stimulants like tobacco and ginseng, fragrances, and filth are intermingled. These elements intertwine into an inseparable whole, continuously in transition. Jung Eunbeen, looking at a round fruit3, asks, “But not all fruits are round, right?” She contemplates the
shape intently, considers its embedded meaning, and eventually decides to empty it out entirely. The neatly emptied hole fills with different scenes each time. The bumpy reality weaves itself vertically, moving back and forth.

Here, we should pause interpretation for a moment. Instead, let’s consider how to play. Explore with your eyes for new routes, stand on tiptoes to grow taller, trace the origins of scents. Because we have decided to joyfully leap over flattened signs, what we gain are sandy tastes in our mouths, stinging palms, breathless tongues, sweet saliva, and new friends seen beyond holes—lovely friends who have always been nearby, just unnoticed.
The playground’s slide sign, “Do not climb,” twisted slightly and baked, turned into delicious bread—“Do-nut climb.” Who needs to line up neatly and walk cautiously in a playground? Just spin around like a donut and leave when it’s time to have dinner.
