I want to be positive, too. Hoping that the arrow will point outward rather than always turning back toward me, I break ground on Digging.
In the middle of a vast construction site in the Paju industrial complex, I place my foot at the center and draw a circle around it, beside the tracks left by an excavator. I shovel out the earth inside the circle to make a hollow, while piling the scraped-up, scab-like soil beside it in the opposite direction. As the sun sets and lights begin to come on one by one in the distance, the hole in front of me becomes increasingly difficult to see.
The act reveals the body as female while, paradoxically, also appearing as a gesture of phallic desire. The “positive-negative” I initially had in mind was a subtly misaligned sensation, crossing somewhere among yin and yang, primary and secondary, affirmation and negation. But as the action continued, these distinctions gradually blurred, eventually shifting into a state that belonged to neither side.
Digging was the first sculptural gesture to emerge at that boundary.
